Cat is not in the Chinese zodiac because the established Chinese 12-animal cycle does not include Cat. In the popular Great Race legend, Cat fails to arrive in time, often because of Rat’s trick. This also gives a folk explanation for why cats chase rats.

The Rat and Cat story

In one common version, Cat and Rat were friends. Cat wanted to join the race but worried about waking up in time. It asked Rat to wake it before the race began.

Rat did not wake Cat. Rat went to the race, rode on Ox, and won first place. Cat woke too late, missed the chance to enter the zodiac, and became angry with Rat.

In another version, Rat and Cat ride together across the river, but Rat pushes Cat into the water. Cat misses the finish and loses its place.

Why Rabbit, not Cat, in the Chinese zodiac?

In the Chinese zodiac, the fourth sign is Rabbit, 兔 tù, paired with the Earthly Branch 卯 mǎo. Rabbit has its own symbolic meaning: gentleness, caution, grace, sensitivity, and quiet movement.

Cat may feel natural to modern readers, but Rabbit is the established Chinese sign. Cat appears in the story as an absent animal, not as a replaced official sign.

The historical reason: cats arrived too late

The legend is the famous answer, but there is a plainer historical one. The twelve-animal set was written down long before the domestic cat reached China. Bamboo-slip almanacs — the Rishu (“Day Books”) unearthed at Shuihudi and Fangmatan, dated to around the 3rd century BC — already tie the twelve animals to the calendar. The house cat, by contrast, only arrived centuries later along the Silk Road; ancient-DNA research reported in 2025 dates it to roughly AD 600–900, with the oldest confirmed remains about AD 730. Line the two up and the gap is close to a thousand years — when the zodiac took shape, there were simply no house cats in China to include.

It even shows in the list itself: six of the twelve are the traditional “six domestic animals” (六畜) — Ox, Horse, Goat, Rooster, Dog, and Pig — and the rest were animals people already knew well, plus the single mythical Dragon. The cat, an outsider that reached China late, was never in the running.

But some zodiac traditions do have Cat

One useful cultural note: not every Asian zodiac tradition uses exactly the same animals. In the Vietnamese zodiac, Cat is commonly used where the Chinese zodiac uses Rabbit.

This does not mean one version is “wrong.” It shows that animal cycles can travel, adapt, and take local forms.

What the missing Cat story means

The story is not only about a missing animal. It gives emotional shape to the zodiac: timing matters, trust can break, cleverness can have consequences, and not every capable animal receives a place.

Common misunderstandings

• Thinking Cat was officially removed. The Chinese zodiac cycle simply does not include Cat.
• Assuming every version mentions Cat. Some Great Race retellings focus only on the twelve arriving animals.
• Confusing Chinese and Vietnamese zodiacs. Vietnamese zodiac tradition commonly includes Cat in place of Rabbit.
• Thinking the story is historical proof. It is folklore, not a historical record.
