1898 Chinese Zodiac: Year of the Earth Dog

1898 Chinese Zodiac: Year of the Earth Dog

The Earth Dog year ran from January 22, 1898 through February 9, 1899. The lunar new year arrived unusually early that season — Start of Spring didn’t land until February 4, thirteen days later, an unusually wide gap between the two markers.

That gap means a stretch of late-January and early-February births read differently depending on which convention is used. We settle who falls where before anything else on the page.

1898 Chinese Zodiac Sign: The Quick Answer

Jan 1 – Jan 21, 1898 Fire Rooster

Still the 1897 zodiac year, which didn’t close until January 21. A birthday in the first three weeks of 1898 lands here, in Rooster, not Dog.

Jan 22, 1898 – Feb 9, 1899 Earth Dog

The 1898 zodiac year, stem-branch 戊戌. It closes the day before the next lunar new year — a birth in early February 1899, up to February 9, is still an Earth Dog, not yet an Earth Pig.

Born in late January 1898?

On the lunar-year convention this page uses — the standard for looking up a birth-year sign — the Earth Dog year runs from January 22, 1898 to February 9, 1899. Anyone born January 1 through January 21, 1898 is still a Fire Rooster carried over from 1897.

The lunar side runs ahead of the solar side this year. The lunar new year landed on January 22, 1898, thirteen days before Start of Spring (Lìchūn) on February 4 — an unusually wide lunar-new-year-first gap. Many BaZi practitioners treat Lìchūn, not the lunar new year, as the boundary, so a birth between January 22 and February 3 already counts as Earth Dog under the lunar convention this page follows, while still reading as the previous year’s Fire Rooster under the solar convention some practitioners use. A February 4 birth needs the exact time and place, since Lìchūn began at a specific moment during that day, not at midnight. The January–February boundary guide lays out both methods side by side.

What an Earth Dog actually is

“Dog” names the animal; the element rides on top of it. 1898 is written 戊戌 (wù xū) — Yang Earth on the stem, sitting above a branch that tradition assigns to Earth as well, the Dog’s own branch element. Stem and branch share the same element here, so nothing is read as controlling or feeding anything else; the pairing doubles Earth’s weight rather than putting two elements in tension. It’s the identical stem-branch as 1958, one sixty-year turn later.

In folklore the Dog didn’t finish last in the Great Race, though it came close. A strong swimmer, the story goes it got sidetracked playing in the water along the way and crossed eleventh of twelve, ahead of only the Pig. Tradition reads the Dog as loyal and honest as a result, more interested in the people around it than in coming first, and Earth is said to settle that loyalty into something steady and unshowy rather than restless. Read that as the symbolic reading tradition offers, not a claim about any specific person born that year.

The year that gave the Reform its name

Here is the detail that sets 1898 apart from every other Dog year. Its sexagenary name, 戊戌 (wùxū), is also the name Chinese history gave to one of the most consequential hundred days of the late Qing dynasty. On June 11, 1898, the Guangxu Emperor launched a sweeping program of institutional reform — reorganizing the civil service examinations, the military and the bureaucracy along more modern lines — an episode known in English as the Hundred Days’ Reform and in Chinese, by its stem-branch year, as 戊戌变法 (Wùxū Biànfǎ).

It lasted barely three months. On September 21, 1898, Empress Dowager Cixi staged a coup, placed the emperor under house arrest and reversed nearly all of the reforms. Six reformers, including Tan Sitong, were executed a week later, on September 28, and are remembered in Chinese history as the 戊戌六君子, the Six Gentlemen of Wuxu. As with the 1911 Metal Pig page’s Xinhai Revolution thirteen years later, the event is filed in Chinese not by a place or a ruler’s name but by the two-character stem-branch of the year in which it happened — the same naming pattern turning up a second time on this site.

Traditional Dog pairings

In the traditional groupings, the Dog forms a three-harmony trine with the Tiger and Horse, pairs with the Rabbit in six-harmony, and stands opposite the Dragon in the clash. These animal relationships stay fixed regardless of which element rides a given Dog year; Earth changes the temperament, not the pairing. The Dog compatibility guide works through each pairing in full.

The pillar 1898 shares with 1958 and 2018

The stem-branch 戊戌 is one point on the sexagenary cycle, and it returns on a fixed sixty-year beat:

Earth Dog yearAge in 2026 for calendar-year births
1838A nineteenth-century cohort; no longer living
1898127 or 128 years old
195867 or 68 years old
20187 or 8 years old

The most recent recurrence is 2018, two complete sixty-year cycles after 1898. A child born during the 2018 Earth Dog year carries the exact same 戊戌 pillar as someone born during the 1898 Earth Dog year, a hundred and twenty years apart on the same sixty-year wheel. The nearer sixty-year link, 1958, sits within a living generation. The Earth Dog element page follows what that shared pillar is traditionally held to carry.

1898 Chinese zodiac: common questions

What is the Chinese zodiac sign for 1898?

1898 is a Dog year — the Earth Dog — for anyone born on or after January 22, 1898.

What are the exact 1898 Earth Dog dates?

January 22, 1898 to February 9, 1899. Anything before January 22, 1898 belongs to the Fire Rooster year of 1897.

What element is 1898 in the Chinese zodiac?

Earth. The full stem-branch name is 戊戌 (wù xū), a Yang Earth year, sitting on the Dog’s own Earth branch.

Is everyone born in 1898 an Earth Dog?

No. Births from January 1 to January 21, 1898 fall in the previous Fire Rooster year. Someone born in early February 1899, up to February 9, is still an 1898 Earth Dog.

How does Start of Spring affect the 1898 boundary?

Start of Spring fell on February 4, 1898, thirteen days after the lunar new year on January 22. Births between January 22 and February 3 already read as Earth Dog under the lunar convention this page follows, while still counting as the previous year’s Fire Rooster under the solar convention some BaZi practitioners use. A February 4 birth needs the exact time and location, because Lìchūn began at a specific moment during that day.

What historical event shares its name with 1898?

The Hundred Days’ Reform, a program of institutional reform launched by the Guangxu Emperor and ended by a coup that same year. It is known in Chinese as 戊戌变法 (Wùxū Biànfǎ), named after this year’s stem-branch, 戊戌.

What years share the 1898 Earth Dog pillar?

The 戊戌 Earth Dog pillar returns every sixty years: 1838, 1898, 1958 and 2018. A child born during the 2018 Earth Dog year carries the exact same stem-branch as someone born during the 1898 Earth Dog year, two sixty-year turns apart.

How old is someone born in 1898 in 2026?

127 or 128 in 2026, depending on whether their birthday has passed.

Editorial note

The calendar side of this page — the January 22, 1898 start, the February 9, 1899 close, and the 戊戌 (wù xū) stem-branch — follows standard sexagenary-cycle calculation and is cross-checked against the neighboring 1899 page already published on this site. Because the Hong Kong Observatory’s online calendar-conversion series begins in 1901, the dates on this page instead rest on independent, cross-checked sources: the Chinese New Year date (January 22, 1898) is documented by both pinyin.info’s historical Chinese New Year table and an independent Chinese lunar-calendar reference; the February 4, 1898 Start of Spring date is documented by two further independent solar-term references consulted for this page, both agreeing on the date though not asked to agree on the exact hour. The Hundred Days’ Reform and its dates are documented in standard English-language histories of the late Qing dynasty. Everything touching character, compatibility and fortune is symbolic tradition, shared for cultural interest. It is not a prediction, and it is not medical, financial or relationship advice.
