1899 Chinese Zodiac: Year of the Earth Pig

The Earth Pig year ran from February 10, 1899 through January 30, 1900. The lunar new year arrived late that season — Start of Spring had already landed six days earlier, on February 4, one of the wider gaps between the two calendar markers on this site.

That gap means a handful of early-February births read differently depending on which convention is used. We settle who falls where before anything else on the page.

1899 Chinese Zodiac Sign: The Quick Answer

Jan 1 – Feb 9, 1899 Earth Dog

Still the 1898 zodiac year, which didn’t close until February 9. A birthday in the first six weeks of 1899 lands here, in Dog, not Pig.

Feb 10, 1899 – Jan 30, 1900 Earth Pig

The 1899 zodiac year, stem-branch 己亥. It closes the day before the next lunar new year — a birth in late January 1900, up to January 30, is still an Earth Pig, not yet a Metal Rat.

Born in early February 1899?

On the lunar-year convention this page uses — the standard for looking up a birth-year sign — the Earth Pig year runs from February 10, 1899 to January 30, 1900. Anyone born January 1 through February 9, 1899 is still an Earth Dog carried over from 1898.

The solar side runs ahead of the lunar side this year. Start of Spring (Lìchūn) fell on February 4, 1899, six days before the lunar new year on February 10 — Lìchūn arrived first, the reverse of years where the lunar new year opens early. Many BaZi practitioners treat Lìchūn, not the lunar new year, as the boundary, so a birth between February 5 and February 9 already reads as Earth Pig under the solar convention, while still counting as Earth Dog under the lunar convention this page follows. A February 4 birth needs the exact time and place, since Lìchūn began at a specific moment during that day, not at midnight. The January–February boundary guide lays out both methods side by side.

What an Earth Pig actually is

“Pig” names the animal; the element rides on top of it. 1899 is written 己亥 (jǐ hài) — Yin Earth on the stem, sitting above a branch that tradition assigns to Water. Earth is read as controlling Water in the five-element cycle, so this pairing is read as the stem holding the branch in check. That’s the same controlling direction as 1904’s 甲辰, where a Wood stem controls an Earth branch — a different element pair working through the same kind of relationship.

In folklore the Pig placed last in the Great Race not from weakness but from an appetite for rest — the story goes that it stopped to eat and then fell asleep on the riverbank, waking only after the other eleven animals had already crossed. Tradition reads the Pig as generous and easygoing as a result, and Earth is said to ground that temperament into something steadier and more domestic than a Water or Wood Pig would carry. Read that as the symbolic reading tradition offers, not a claim about any specific person born that year.

A doorway custom named for the Pig: 肥猪拱门

肥猪拱门 (féi zhū gǒng mén) — literally “the fat pig pushes open the door” — is a Chinese New Year decorative motif and auspicious expression: a plump pig, often shown carrying a treasure bowl on its back, pasted or hung at the entrance of a home to welcome in fortune. The image traces to Tianjin’s Yangliuqing (杨柳青) New Year woodblock prints of the Republican era, and it later became one of the standard designs in Tianjin papercutting, still catalogued today among the region’s ten classic papercut motifs. Writers Lao She and Zhang Henshui both used the expression in their Beiping-set novels Four Generations Under One Roof and The Grace and Splendor of a Family Dynasty, and the motif traditionally associates the pig’s arrival with prosperity.

Unlike most idioms chosen for these pages, 肥猪拱门 is better documented as a New Year visual motif and auspicious expression than as a classical idiom — closer in kind to the ox-whipping ritual described on the 1913 Water Ox page than to a scholar’s proverb. It’s included here as the same kind of cultural fact: a documented, still-practiced tradition that ties directly to this year’s animal.

The pillar 1899 shares with 1959 and 2019

The stem-branch 己亥 is one point on the sexagenary cycle, and it returns on a fixed sixty-year beat:

Earth Pig yearAge in 2026 for calendar-year births
1839A nineteenth-century cohort; no longer living
1899126 or 127 years old
195966 or 67 years old
20196 or 7 years old

The most recent recurrence is 2019, two complete sixty-year cycles after 1899. A person born during the 2019 Earth Pig year carries the exact same 己亥 pillar as someone born during the 1899 Earth Pig year, a hundred and twenty years apart on the same sixty-year wheel. The nearer sixty-year link, 1959, sits within a living generation. The Earth Pig element page follows what that shared pillar is traditionally held to carry.

Traditional Pig pairings

In the traditional groupings, the Pig forms a three-harmony trine with the Rabbit and Goat, pairs with the Tiger in six-harmony, and stands opposite the Snake in the clash. These animal relationships stay fixed regardless of which element rides a given Pig year; Earth changes the temperament, not the pairing. The Pig compatibility guide works through each pairing in full.

Both neighbors have their own pages here now: the Rat year right after this one, and the Earth Dog year right before it, including the note on 1898’s own historical namesake, the Hundred Days’ Reform. The Pig animal guide follows the five elements through every Pig year, including this one.

1899 Chinese zodiac: common questions

What is the Chinese zodiac sign for 1899?

1899 is a Pig year — the Earth Pig — for anyone born on or after February 10, 1899.

What are the exact 1899 Earth Pig dates?

February 10, 1899 to January 30, 1900. Anything before February 10, 1899 belongs to the Earth Dog year of 1898.

What element is 1899 in the Chinese zodiac?

Earth. The full stem-branch name is 己亥 (jǐ hài), a Yin Earth year, sitting on the Pig’s own Water branch.

Is everyone born in 1899 an Earth Pig?

No. Births from January 1 to February 9, 1899 fall in the previous Earth Dog year. Someone born in late January 1900, up to January 30, is still an 1899 Earth Pig.

How does Start of Spring affect the 1899 boundary?

Start of Spring fell on February 4, 1899, six days before the lunar new year on February 10. Births between February 5 and February 9 already read as Earth Pig under the solar convention some BaZi practitioners use, while still counting as Earth Dog under the lunar convention this page follows. A February 4 birth needs the exact time and location, because Lìchūn began at a specific moment during that day.

What years share the 1899 Earth Pig pillar?

The 己亥 Earth Pig pillar returns every sixty years: 1839, 1899, 1959 and 2019. A person born during the 2019 Earth Pig year carries the exact same stem-branch as someone born during the 1899 Earth Pig year, two sixty-year turns apart.

How old is someone born in 1899 in 2026?

126 or 127 in 2026, depending on whether their birthday has passed.

Looking this up for someone born in 1899?

A public page stops at the shared facts. If what brought you here is an ancestor’s record — a date in an old register, a name on a family tree you’re trying to fill in — two things carry a birth year further than a page like this can:

Editorial note

The calendar side of this page — the February 10, 1899 start, the January 30, 1900 close, and the 己亥 (jǐ hài) stem-branch — follows standard sexagenary-cycle calculation and is cross-checked against the neighboring 1900 page already published on this site. Because the Hong Kong Observatory’s online calendar-conversion series begins in 1901, the dates on this page instead rest on two independent, cross-checked sources: the Chinese New Year date (February 10, 1899) is documented by both pinyin.info’s historical Chinese New Year table and asia-home.com’s independent conversion calculator; the February 4, 1899 Start of Spring date is documented by two independent solar-term references consulted for this page. The 肥猪拱门 custom and its origin in Tianjin Yangliuqing New Year prints are documented in standard Chinese folklore references. Everything touching character, compatibility and fortune is symbolic tradition, shared for cultural interest. It is not a prediction, and it is not medical, financial or relationship advice.
