The Tiger already stood for raw capability in classical Chinese long before this page needed a phrase for a Water Tiger year. 如虎添翼 (rú hǔ tiān yì) — “like a tiger given wings” — is recorded in Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Dictionary of Chinese Idioms as tracing to the military treatise Xinshu (心書·兵機), attributed to the Three Kingdoms strategist Zhuge Liang: “將能執兵之權，操兵之勢，而臨群下，譬如猛虎加之羽翼，而翱翔四海，隨所遇而施之” — a general who holds command of troops and stands before his ranks is like a fierce tiger given wings, able to soar across the four seas and strike wherever it meets an opponent.
The idiom survives in ordinary Chinese today with the same shape: it’s not used to describe something weak becoming adequate, only something already strong picking up one more advantage on top of what it had. A tiger doesn’t need wings to hunt — the wings just mean it no longer has to stay on the ground.
