They are manifestations of bodhisattvas, and they work in rotation: for one day and night a single creature goes out among people to teach, while the remaining eleven stay behind, and then the turn passes on. That turns out to matter, because it means the buyer has to know the recipient&#8217;s sign before anything else can happen. Picture a Samantabhadra pendant chosen in a jade shop in Guangdong for a brother-in-law: the choice of that particular figure already carries a piece of information in it, since Samantabhadra belongs to the Dragon and the Snake.
