It is not a Six Harmonies pair, and the complete three-branch grouping also requires 丑 (Ox). The next section explains what that half-combination actually rests on, which is where most compatibility write-ups stop short.

What a Three Harmonies trio actually is: a metal life-cycle, not two tidy signs

Most Rooster-and-Snake write-ups explain the match by stacking personality adjectives — both intelligent, both stylish, both goal-oriented — and leaving it there. The classical reason the two branches are grouped at all is more specific, and it has nothing to do with temperament.

In the Four Pillars framework, each of the five elements is imagined moving through a life cycle across the twelve branches: it is born, grows, peaks, weakens, and is finally stored away. Three of those stages are the load-bearing ones — birth (长生, chángshēng), peak (帝旺, dìwàng), and tomb or storehouse (墓, mù). A Three Harmonies trio is simply the three branches that hold those three stages for one element. The three-stage vocabulary above — 长生, 帝旺, 墓 — is later Four Pillars and calendrical terminology. An earlier version of the same three-branch pattern already appears in the Han-era Huainanzi (淮南子, 2nd century BCE), using an older vocabulary of 生, 壯, 死: 金生於巳，壯於酉，死於丑, “metal is born at Si (Snake), strongest at You (Rooster), and ends at Chou (Ox).” Later Four Pillars doctrine formalizes that pattern into the modern three-stage terminology. For metal, that is:

长生 · BirthSnake 巳
The branch where metal is traditionally said to be “born” — its long-life stage, the point where the element first takes hold.

帝旺 · PeakRooster 酉
The branch where metal is at its strongest — the peak or “emperor” stage, the middle and center of the trio.

墓 · StorehouseOx 丑
The branch where metal is stored away — the tomb stage that closes the cycle and completes the full 巳酉丑 trine.

So the metal trio isn’t three signs that happen to get along. It is one element’s rising-and-resting arc, split across three branches. Snake and Rooster are the first two of those three: the birth of metal and the peak of metal. This is a statement about a life-cycle position, not about the branches’ own fixed elements — in another classical scheme Snake’s own branch reads as fire and Rooster’s as metal, but the trine describes where metal rises and rests across the calendar, not what each animal “is.” That shared metal current — not a checklist of shared traits — is what the tradition points to when it groups them.

Why 巳酉 is called a 生旺半合 — and what that does not mean

When only two of a trio’s three branches are present, later and contemporary BaZi terminology treats it as a half-combination (半合, bàn hé). Later BaZi practice further sorts these two-branch groups by which stages they cover. In the later BaZi terminology used here, 巳酉 is a 生旺半合, a “birth-and-peak” half-combination: 巳 supplies the birth position (长生) and 酉 supplies the peak (帝旺). That differs from 酉丑, which joins the peak (帝旺) and the storage position (墓) and is commonly called a 旺墓半合. Both include 酉, so including the peak branch alone does not define a 生旺半合 — the specific pair of stages is what the label is naming. This sorting is standard in later and contemporary BaZi practice; it is not a fixed ranking stated in the early classical sources.

That label describes the structure — which two of metal’s three life-cycle stages the pair holds — and nothing more. Later BaZi commentary sometimes calls the peak-inclusive variants comparatively strong, but the label by itself does not establish successful transformation into Metal in a full chart, a favorable outcome in someone’s birth reading, or a compatibility verdict between two people. It is also the honest limit on the claim: 巳酉 is a half of a three-branch group, not a self-contained two-branch bond like a Six Harmonies pair. Ox is not optional for the full trine.

Snake and Rooster do not share a Three Meetings group or form a Six Harmonies pair. Nor are they paired by the clash, harm, punishment, or break rules checked on this page. These are classifications within the branch-relationship systems this page reports on — an absence of a named tie inside those systems, not a guarantee about a relationship between two real people.

First, make sure these are really your two signs

A pairing reading is only about the right two signs if each birthday is placed in the correct zodiac year — and the boundary is not January 1. Later BaZi terminology describes 巳酉 as a 生旺半合 — a birth-and-peak half-combination — because 巳 supplies the birth position and 酉 the peak.
